President's Message

November 14th 2009 marked the beginning of our chapter’s new look. Eighteen excited members and friends braved the cold morning air to participate in our chapters first annual Walk A Thon “Take A Walk On The Wild Side” when all the tennis shoes cooled off, our group raised over $3,000.00. Funds from our walk will be used to develop, and operate our new Youth Adventure Camp. Special thanks go out to all of our sponsors and pledges’ to our walk a thon. Without your support our chapter could not exist.   More information on this program will be sent out to you shortly.

Our Youth Outdoor Adventure Camp will be the first step in the reorganization and direction our Directors have chosen to lead our chapter in. During a recent Board of Directors Meeting our directors decided to become more focused in a single direction, less fragmented as we have been in the past. That direction is in developing youth programs and focusing on our youth with all of our plans and event for the next few years. Our youth are our future and if we do not step up and recognize their importance now, our group and our valuable hunting heritage will be lost possibly forever. Directors, Chuck Wyllie, Tom Mazzone, Jim Dusa, and Brent Nobles will lead the troops in our new direction, with all of our directors going ALL IN as well ! I am convinced that with a team like these four in charge of our new youth program surge, you the membership, our chapter and our youth could not be in better hands. Plans are already in the works for School visits, with our Mobile Wildlife Education Center, to educate our youth of their importance in conservation, along with the initial development of our youth camp. Local scholarship programs are being designed and a continued effort to bring additional youth to our membership ranks is ongoing.

For those loyal members and supporters don’t be alarmed our chapter will still actively work on programs such as, Safari Wish, Sportsman Against Hunger, SCI’s Blue Bag Humanitarian program, helping less fortunate people Internationally, and political action hot topic needs will continue to be addressed, just on a lower level than in the past.

2009 proved to be, as most of you are aware, a very difficult economic year in which to survive, challenging our chapters resolve. As I am sure you have realized, our chapter decided not to hold our annual dinner fundraiser in 2009, and to push off future dinner fundraisers until our local area economy rebounded. With our economy on the rebound, we have decided to get back on track and have begun negotiations with local area facilities to select a date and location for our Third Annual Dinner. I am excited to announce that our chapter will have a dinner in early 2010. The date and location for the event will be announced shortly.

I leave you with this promise. I and our Directors promise to work hard for you our members, to manage your chapter to our best ability, and once again be recognized as one of the top SCI chapters in the nation. We further promise to take care of our valuable resource our youth, and to introduce them once again to our great outdoors.

One last thought please mark your calendars to attend the Safari Club International Annual Hunters Convention on January 20-23 in Reno, Nevada. This is the largest convention of its kind, and from a firsthand experience, I highly recommend that you attend at least one day. You will not be disappointed!!!!  Tickets are now available by contacting SCI direct   @ 520-620-1220 or on line @   www.scifirstforhunters.org

Sincerely,

Larry J. Johns
