Safari in a Blue Bag Program
“Safari Care”
Distributing Medical and Educational materials worldwide
Are you planning to travel outside of the United States this year ? If so, why not carry along a Blue Bag to those in need. Safari In A Blue
Bag is a National SCI Humanitarian project where the much needed Medical Supplies and Educational materials are gathered locally and
distributed in areas of our world that are less fortunate. If you are interested in participating in this program, please give us a call and we
will see that you are provided with the Blue Bag. Our chapter will also help with acquiring the contents for distribution. There’s no better
way to help than by sharing what we have with those that are far less fortunate.

Recent Safari Wish Donation
Safari Wish
Granting Wishes Worldwide
SCI chapters have provided Safari Wishes for over 200 children and disabled individuals in 2005, and many more in 2006. SCI Foundation’s Safari Wish Project is part of SCI Foundation’s Safari Care Program, which has been designed to grant hunting and hunting related wishes to individuals with life- threatening illnesses. It is our chapter’s wish to become a big part of this program. We are hoping to sponsor grants for wishes to anyone that submits and is accepted locally, and Nationally. Please help us with this program by offering both time and money. You will feel a tremendous personal satisfaction by participating in this program. Help us to give these beautiful individuals a wish to remember forever.
HOAL Needs Kids
Hunt of a Lifetime (HOAL) is a national nonprofit organization that provides hunting and fishing opportunities for children with life-threatening and terminal illnesses. Since Arizona passed legislation in 2005 to make big-game permit transfers possible, the Arizona chapter (HOAL AZ) has sent 14 youngsters on 16 hunts.
Right now, however, HOAL AZ has a shortage of youngsters to fill several available hunts that include five for bull elk and one each for pronghorn antelope and bear in Arizona. There's also an ibex hunt in New Mexico available. These are all premium hunting opportunities that most adult hunters would love to have.
When a youngster is accepted to take part, he or she receives a total hunt package including equipment, transportation (air and ground), a guide/outfitter, lodging, meat processing and delivery, as well as taxidermy and delivery of their mount at no cost. Also, one parent can accompany the young hunter.
So if you have a minor child (age 10-17) or know someone else who has one with a life threatening illness who would like to go on an HOAL hunt, contact Arizona Ambassador Terry Petko by phone at 602-689-9524 or by e-mail at tpetko@hoalarizona.org as soon as possible.

Offering a unique opportunity to the visually impaired
Sensory Safari is a unique experience for the visually impaired. Children and adults are escorted by knowledgeable “ Safari Guides” through a variety of touchable displays of animal, fish and bird mounts, skins, skulls, and horns. The guides describe the animals, their habitats and behaviors as participants touch and sometimes hug the displays. Sensory Safaris are a wonderful way to give our visually impaired children and adults a hands-on wildlife education. Our chapter is looking for sponsors and partners to develop our own Sensory Safari program locally. If you feel that this is an area that might be of interest, please call our President and he will be able to talk further with you about our needs. Once our program is launched, we will be moving it around our local area school system also, allowing all to benefit from its educational content.
Disabled Hunters
Helping those with Disabilities
There are over 555,000 hunters and shooters with disabilities in the United States alone. With this program, disabled hunters and shooters across the country are benefiting from the generous gifts of time, goods, and services provided by SCI members. SCI members make an effort to make outdoor sports available and accessible in a discrete fashion for the disabled hunter. Nationally, SCI provides at least one or more hunting opportunities a year for disabled hunters of all ages.
SCI National provides an annual award named the Pathfinder Award. This award is presented to an individual who is faced with overcoming a physical challenge or disability that is potentially interfering with their way of life. A person that has shown a "never quit" attitude. Locally, we are looking to create our own Chapter award in this area for 2007.
Our chapter will be holding our own Disabled Hunter program in 2007. We will keep each of you informed on this program and our possible needs. If any of you are aware of an individual that might be interested in being part of this heartwarming program, please let us know and we will be sure to invite them to take part in our event.
Cast For The Cure
($200.00 In Raffle Sales donated to Cast For The Cure )
On July 15, 2006, the Sutter Buttes chapter of Safari Club International became an official sponsor of “Cast For the Cure”. It is a local organization that works with women recovering form Breast cancer surgery. The chapter helped with the sale of raffle tickets during our summer BBQ for 2 Polaris Quad runners, which were drawn in December 2006. The raffle proceeds helped Diane and her organization in the preparation of their Retreat.
Diane Battaglia and her untiring committee work throughout the year planning, and searching for support for their Retreat (held September 23 & 24 2006) for women recovering from Breast Cancer surgeries. In their retreat, women are taught how to deal with post surgery issues. Physical as well as mental aspects of recovery are covered.
One of the main recovery tactics that are taught during their retreat is the art of fly fishing. Doctors have found that the motion of casting a fly rod works many of the areas of the body that have been effected by surgery. What a great way to help with these women's needs, while at the same time introducing them to the outdoors.
Anyone interested in participating in their retreat in future years, either as a participant or a volunteer, can reach Diane at 530-682-1088 or by visiting their web site at www.castforthecure.org.
Sportsman Against Hunger Program
(Over 550 pounds of game meat donated)
Recently our chapter was contacted by Eva Wilson, Humanitarian Services Coordinator from National Headquarters of Safari Club International. Her request was simple, please donate meat. With the “Sportsman Against Hunger Week” starting ( November 13th - 19th, 2006), it was her goal to top the 2005 donations from fourteen chapters Nationally. Their total weight for the year was 79,139 pounds of wild game distributed to the needy.
Her offer, to supply our chapter with bags, literature, aprons, and cook books to help in our efforts was just to hard to turn down. What better way to take part in a local project, while helping to feed our local hungry. With a brief e-mail to our members, the meat began to arrive. After the smoke cleared, we had collected over 550 pounds of wild game from, Jim Dusa, Jay Stevenson, Larry Johns, and what a surprise when Brent Nobles called with a delivery of over 400 pounds of wild boar, and bear. And may I add, Brent Had all of this meat processed, and paid the bill just to donate to the program. Now that's support.
This is a great start to a very rewarding program. Please keep it coming.
For delivery to our chapter please call Larry Johns @ 530-301-6257, and he will help coordinate the distribution. Thanks to everyone.
